Restriction Of Plastic Waste Arising Through The Effectivity Of Society Collaboration

According to data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registry of Kemdagri the population of Indonesia as of June 30, 2020 reached people. And based on data from the Central Agency Statisitc BPS the percentage of households is 80.07 percent according to the status of home ownership . This is one of the factors that is very influential to the volume of garbage in Indonesia, with this large population no wonder Indonesia becomes the second largest contributor of plastic waste after China, many efforts have been made by the government and also private to solve this problem but Indonesia is still one of the countries with the worst waste management in the world.

With this large population and changes in people's consumption patterns, the volume of plastic use increases but the use of plastic is not accompanied by good management so that in the end, plastic waste arises on a large scale. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry says that plastic waste accounts for about 14 percent of the total waste in Indonesia as much as 64 tons per year, which means there are about 8.96 tons of plastic waste annually and this number could increase in the following years if people continue using a lifestyle that depends on plastic use. Households are the main consumers in the economic circuit so it is undeniably becomes one of the most contributors to waste. Not least food products, beverages, soap, home appliances and other household necessities wrapped in plastic. The well-designed concept of Go Green will only be a beautiful sentence, if not accompanied by implementation as well as a low level of public awareness of restrictions on plastic use.

The low level of public awareness of plastic waste is in line with the low level of public concern for health and environmental cleanliness. Based on research from the Ministry of Health, only 20 percent of the total Indonesian public who care about cleanliness and health and well-being shows that there are about 80 percent of the public who are indifferent to health and environmental cleanliness. The community as the main producer of plastic waste arising, therefore the government needs to collaborate with the community in dealing with the restriction of waste arising, the central authorities can adopt programs such as Bali partnership where this program is a cross-actor collaboration, involving various elements of the nation.

How to engage the community to collaborate effectively:

Doc: KKNTEDC

First, the community should be given socialization and education of the impact of plastic waste on their life and environment, if previously the socialization program only targetted the people in areas whose environment has been polluted. Like the KKN Citarum Harum program, this program only targets regional areas in citarum watershed, which means that this program only realizes the people who have been affected, and after interviewing many people in citarum watershed area who are basically aware of the impact of plastic waste. And of course this can be said that this program is not targeted, and inefficient, many funds have been used to run socialization and education programs through KKN Citarum Harum whereas what the community needs around Citarum Harum Watershed is no longer counseling but rather a tool that can be used to handle garbage piling up, as well as landfills ( TPS).

But, in other areas there are still many people who are not aware of the impact of plastic waste, and have not experienced directly how plastic waste damages the environment, and  health and the impact to quality of life, for example in Garut Malangbong area, public awareness of palstic waste is still very minim, level of education that is minimal making the public do not know the impact of the use of plastic waste. Imagine how the condition of Garut area in the next ten years if the community still depends on the use of plastic, it could be this area will be a mountain of plastic waste, as well as agricultural food stuffs will have poor quality, and of course this food stuff in addition to their own consumption of agricultural produce is also sold to the market, and consumed by the public at large so that the impact of public health is also affected. It has only small number of socialization and education program of plastic use to areas that are still basically not polluted but have tainted potential. So that with counsellings can motivate the community using the concept of Go Green.

The second, way that people can actively participate is to involve every element of society in campaigning for the concept of Go Green so that people feel the same responsibility in realizing the mission of Indonesia Clean and Free Waste 2025. With the approach of improving the mindset of the community continuously, it is expected that the community is more active in efforts to limit the use of plastic. With society collaboration incentively, government ambitious target of reducing waste ups and downs by as much as 30 percent is likely to be achieved.

The effectiveness of society in limitting the use of plastic is to reduce the use of plastic for all goods of need, and actively participate in realizing the mission of Indonesia Clean and Free Plastic Waste 2025, with the movement of all elements of the nation in reducing the use of plastic then restrictions on the onset of plastic waste with a target of 30 percent can be realized. Concrete society efforts in reducing the onset of garbage in the future can be through various means. replacing plastic with other materials that are more environmentally friendly, with the development of science and technology that is increasingly advanced has many other alternatives that can be used to subtitus plastic in support of needs.

For example,in daily life to replace plastic straws can use reusable straws this straw is more environmentally friendly this reusable straw is made from stainless steel material, silicon bamboo, and also glass. And the size is not too big so it is easy to carry where it can be used when drinking in restaurants or elsewhere. Carrying your own shopping bag when going to the market or supermarket although at this time there are many supermarkets that no longer provide palstic bags however, not least supermarkets especially traditional markets that still use plastic to wrap groceries. Therefore, people in any condition take precedence carrying an eco-friendly shopping bag because when in has many shopping bags that are environmentally friendly as well as with a stylish look. Using wooden cutlery can also be used as an alternative to replace cutlery made from plastic and in addition to reducing plastic waste, the cleanliness of this environmentally friendly product is also more maintained. Bringing tumblers from home, to reduce the use of bottled water in addition to reducing the use of plastic carrying tumblers from home can also save more expenses.

And for female who every month need sanitary pads, and it mostly use plastic  that are not environmentally friendly can replace them by using sanitary pads from cotton fabrics in addition to environmentally friendly products sanitary pads from cotton is also healthier and more frugal. And there are many other alternaltives that can be used to replace plastic in supporting needs. By assessing the large number of residents and households in Indonesia that have potential to increase the volume of garbage in Indonesia by the fact that if the community is active and participate in realizing the mission of Clean and Free Waste Indonesia in 2025 the impact of garbage in the future will be minim. Restriction of Plastic Waste Arising through The Effectivity of Society Collaboration is very important to realize the mission of Indonesia Clean and Free Plastic Waste 2025.

Come on. Take part!
